Recreationally, Thomas P. Ivanyi enjoys traveling to new destinations around the world with his wife, Ellin. When traveling, Thomas P. Ivanyi strives to learn about cultures of the countries he visits. Having just returned form 3 weeks in Asia visiting Hong, Kong, Taiwan, China and Japan.

Each country have both similarities on politeness and differences on behavior when in public be it a restaurant, hotel or recreational location. Respecting privacy is essential as are differences in accepted behavior. When in certain cities in China the car making a turn has priority over the pedestrian crossing the street with the light. In Japan making noise while eating noodles is a sign of appreciation for the good food. Thus it is important to be mindful that American practices are not only ones that apply. Another more commonly understood difference is driving: both Hong Kong and Japan follow the British driving on the right versus the left side as in continental Europe and the USA.

As in the US many countries have relaxed and more casual dress codes. Yes even in these countries very abbreviated shorts or jeans for both men and women are discouraged.

Food of course is a common factor with great variety and selection. Understanding the offering is essentials as outside the main cities English is not consistently spoken. It is useful to have a guide book for each country that discusses food and different cuisines in addition to customs and sites.
